Don't Understand What Geofencing is? Get All the Answers

Understand what geofencing is, what is it used for and how it can benefit your fleet management.

1. What is the purpose of geofencing?

The purpose of geofencing is to add a sense of automation to your fleet management. Instead of having to watch a map all day, you can create virtual boundaries that notify you every time a vehicle crosses that line; helping you manage drivers, your customers and your vehicles.

2. What is a common use of geofencing?

One of the most common uses of geofencing is keeping drivers out of unsafe areas. It can also be used to keep service technicians within a particular zone. If they cross your geofence perimeters, you’ll be alerted and can correct your staff.

3. Does geofencing require GPS?

Yes, geofencing depends on GPS signals to track the vehicles you want to control with geofences. Geofences can be drawn on a virtual map, but you won’t be able to enforce adherence for your drivers unless you can track those vehicles with a GPS tracker.

4. How do I set up geofences in the Cartrack app?

  • Log in to the Cartrack app or home page
  • Go to “List”
  • Select “Geofences”
  • Fill in the details of your geofence and select a colour
  • Draw your geofence with the circle, square or freehand tool
  • This new geofence will now appear on the “List” section

5. Does geofencing prevent vehicle theft?

Yes, geofencing can be used to prevent vehicle theft, but only if you have a tracking & recovery package. The geofence can be used as an early warning system that alerts you if your vehicle has moved out of an area you’ve marked with the geofencing tool.

6. Will I receive notifications if my driver moves out of geofences?

Yes, notifications will be sent in the form of emails or SMSs—whichever you choose. You can also set up the conditions for those alerts, the most common of which is moving out of a marked zone, or moving into a marked zone.

7. Can geofences detect and stop route deviation?

Yes, geofences can be used to create route plans. If a driver deviates from that route, you’ll be notified. You can also select routes that you DON’T want your drivers to take, and will then be alerted if they deviate from their approved routes to the ones you’ve marked.

8. Do I need a fleet management system to set up geofences?

Geofencing is a feature that forms part of a fleet management software package. This gives you the map, the ability to draw up geofences, and an alert system to condition when you receive notifications and what the conditions for those notifications should be.

9. What are the benefits of using geofences?

The benefits of using geofences in fleet management include:

  • Automation of various processes
  • Eliminating the need to “map watch”
  • Easier logistics management
  • Stronger operational insights through recorded data
  • Instant alerts when deviations are made by drivers

10. What is the minimum radius for a geofence?

The minimum radius for a geofence is around 5 to 10 meters. This gives you incredible accuracy when drawing one on a map, allowing you to mark yards, buildings, lots and specific shops. Once you’ve created a geofence, you can always move it to exactly where you want it for finer accuracy.

11. Can geofencing work for farm equipment?

Yes, geofencing is incredibly useful for farm equipment when combined with tracking units. GPS tracking isn’t used here at all. Instead, an RF signal tracking device (known as the CT Tag) is attached onto farm equipment. This transmits data for tracking and other operational purposes, and can then be auto-monitored using geofences.

12. How much does Cartrack charge to set up geofences?

Geofences aren’t charged for each time you create one. You’ll get the ability to create an unlimited number of them using the Cartrack fleet management platform, FleetWeb. Geofencing comes with many of our fleet software solutions, so give us a call and get yours today.
