Ekurhuleni road names set to change

25 September 2019

If you’re driving from Joburg city centre to OR Tambo International, don’t be surprised to hear your GPS say you’re driving though George Bizos Interchange and past Lungile Mtshali Road as the City of Ekurhuleni gears up to change several of its well-known streets and areas.

According to news agencies, this Gauteng-based city will be looking to rename the well-known Gillooly’s interchange to celebrate the life of anti-apartheid human rights lawyer and Rivonia trialist, Adv George Bizos SC. Van Buuren off-ramp, another famous landmark on route between Pretoria and Durban, will be named Thabo Mbeki.

Other roads earmarked for a name change include:

  • Olifantsfontein Road to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Road
  • Snake Road to Mary Moodley
  • Ego Road to Magaret Gazo
  • Kliprivier Road to Sam Ntuli Road

The Germiston Government Precinct will soon be known as OR Tambo Government Precinct, while other areas planned for renaming are:

  • Springs Theatre to Ken Gampu Theatre
  • Germiston Theatre to Dumisani Masilela Theatre

The city’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina has stated that the changes have come about as result of a plan to build a city whose landmarks, highways, streets and intersections bear a resemblance of all the people who make up its population.

“The collective identity and moral image of the City must be drawn from within the histories of the whole population and promote social cohesion in our efforts in creating a National Democratic Society,” he added.

The City owns 35 of the 42 roads identified for renaming and will discuss the renaming of the other 7 roads with the National and Provincial government bodies.
