SA’s most fuel-efficient cars

7 July 2019
A few months ago, an internet meme made the rounds showing various payment methods including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and an Arm & Leg, the tagline on the meme was “Me trying to decide how I’ll be paying for fuel this month.” While it’s a humorous take on the matter, it’s certainly one we can all relate to – the ever-increasing cost of living. So, it’s no surprise that more South Africans are turning to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles and here is CARmag’s Top 10 in that category*.
Each vehicle was driven on a 100-kilometre round trip that comprised of both urban and highway sections so that the team could get real time data of the actual usage of the vehicle as opposed to the claimed amount.

The feisty little Honda Jazz 1,5 Sport CVT used 5.9 litres of fuel per 100km.

The Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi was the heaviest car on the test, but delivered 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

The ubiquitous VW Polo 1.0 TSI Comfortline used a mere 5,8 litres of fuel over the 100 kilometres. Apparently, this is the car that can go and go, and only need another tank some 690 kilometres on.

Renault’s go-anywhere-do-anything duster 1.5dCI 4.2 Prestige delivers an impressive 5.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.

The Hyundai i20 Active is a cute little hatchback that only used 5.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.

The Suzuki Dzire, the company’s sedan ran on 5.6 litres on the route followed

Efficient yet powerful – the Ford Figo 1,5 Trend delivered the goods using just 5.5 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres.

Suzuki’s larger than life hatchback, the Baleno 1,4 GLX also came in at using just 5.5 litres over the 100-kilometre journey.

The Honda Amaze is the brand’s second vehicle on this list, coming in at amazingly affordable 5.5 litres over the 100 kilometres.

Rounding out the CARmag test is the Suzuki Swift1.2 GL with its four-cylinder engine using a mere 5.4 litres of fuel over the 100-kilometre journey
